Roof lanterns originate from the 16th century where they formed architectural "feature roofs" on the Orangeries that were popular at that time (predominately in the South of France and Italy during the Renaissance). The Victorians used them extensively to light stairwells.
Roof lanterns are multi-paned glass structures that sit on a flat roof, allowing light to flood into a room or living area, but with considerably more internal and external architectural appeal than a conventional skylight.
